Lead role descriptions
Below are descriptions for all Lead Roles at Footprint Farm. Some are already assigned to current crew members. For a list of available roles for the current season please email [email protected]
Lead Roles can be added to any Job Description (except for High Tunnel Manager) as long as the employee has the appropriate skills and experience. These Roles are intended to spread responsibility amongst the crew and to give employees the opportunity to deepen their skills in specific areas of the Farm’s operations. Employees may have zero to three Lead Roles, depending on their interest, experience and the scope of the roles. Note: (FT) means that employees must work on a full time basis in order to adopt lead.
Maintenance Lead
The Maintenance Lead is responsible for scheduling and executing site and equipment needs. This includes, but is not limited to: mowing, weed whacking, vehicle maintenance, fuel runs, and other miscellaneous building and equipment maintenance needs. This Lead can either perform maintenance themselves or help in scheduling maintenance from outside sources.
Responsibilities and Duties
-Schedule and execute mowing and weed whacking
-Schedule and execute (or arrange/delegate) equipment and vehicle maintenance
-Lead a simple maintenance training for the rest of the crew
-Keep fuel cans stocked
-Keep Equipment Shed stocked with necessary maintenance supplies
Qualifications and Skills
-Enough experience with relevant equipment to be able to identify maintenance issues
-Ability to follow safety protocols regarding equipment use and maintenance
Bed Prep Lead (FT)
The Bed Prep Lead acts as the point person for leading field amendment activities as well as coordinates with Jake regarding bed flipping needs, certain inventory needs, and performs field work with the BCS.
Responsibilities and Duties
-Interpret, communicate and execute amendment plan
-Coordinate amending flow (people, supplies and equipment)
-Coordinate with Jake on bed flipping needs and bed prep plan
-Keep track of and inventory amending supplies, report back when new supplies are needed
-Flail mow finished crops
-Make beds using BCS (block 5 and high tunnels)
Qualifications and Skills
-Have spent at least one full season working at Footprint Farm, or equivalent experience
-Be able to interpret and execute field plan and amendment plan
-Effective, respectful and kind communication skills
-Proficiency with BCS
-Ability to follow amending SOPs
Greenhouse Lead (FT)
The Greenhouse Lead is responsible for managing day to day operations of the greenhouse including watering, seedling maintenance, and general upkeep as well as leading weekly seeding activities. This person must work full time, as greenhouse watering needs consistency and continuity. The majority of seeding work will happen on Mondays.
Responsibilities and Duties
-Morning watering, and afternoon when needed
-Moving plants around greenhouse based on space or growth needs
-Lead seeding activities
-Manage germination chamber
-Keep trays clean and organized
-Monitor and trap for pests
-Monitor, report on and administer IPM needs
-Keep supply inventory and report back for inventory needs
-Monitor and take lead on venting, heating and covering in the greenhouse
Qualifications and Skills
-Have spent at least one full season working at Footprint Farm, or equivalent experience
-Understanding of Greenhouse Binder and ability to carry out seeding needs from crop plan
-Detail oriented
-Time management skills
Wholesale Lead (must work Wednesdays)
The Wholesale Lead acts at the Farm’s main point of face to face contact for Wholesale customers. They will lead wash/pack activities on wholesale days (Wednesdays), ensure that the correct products are sent to the correct locations, and will deliver orders using the Farm’s delivery vehicle(s). This is an excellent position for first year Footprint Farm employees as it allows an insight into the whole cycle of the business, from seeding to delivery.
Responsibilities and Duties
-Lead wash/pack on wholesale days
-Perform tote tally to ensure that orders are delivered correctly
-Deliver wholesale orders
-Interface with wholesale customers on delivery
-Keep delivery vehicle(s) clean and ready to go for Thursday deliveries
Qualifications and Skills
-High interpersonal skills
-Attention to detail
